Looking back on
The Game is in the Piece #2, I think that I might be implying that
DISKWARS might have been a commercial flop when put up against Mageknight. Nothing could be farther from the truth in a commercial sense. I'm listening (right now) to the
Boardgamespeak with Christian Petersen, the alpha male behind Fantasy Flight Games.
Give this a listen, btw, it's well worth having to put up with Derk's snide commentary. In any event, Christian is going through the history of FFG, and makes a comment that the combination of Diskwars and
The Lord of the Rings Knizia game really "put FFG on the map" and made them "many millions". That kind of put things in persepctive. In hindsight, games from the past start to look like flops because we aren't playing them much, anymore.
I do think the clickies invasion put paid to the idea of diskwars, but only in
market penetration sense. It really was a financial success, after all!
