Jim Baen seriously ill
It has been reported on several blogs that
Jim Baen, the influential editor in chief of
Baen Books and a fine short story editor in his own right, has suffered a massive stroke and is in the ICU. This would appear to be confirmed by Terri Weisskopf of Baen books:
Dear Barflies
I'm sorry to have to announce that Jim Baen suffered a stroke on Monday, and
has been in the hospital ever since. His condition is serious, but it's too
early for any prognosis as to how he'll fare from here on in.
His family has arrived in NC, and are with him in the hospital. I've been
to see him, as have other members of Baen's staff and his friend David
Drake. In the meantime, so far as Baen Books is concerned, our plans
continue on schedule.
The business is fine, we're all simply very
concerned about Jim.
Toni Weisskopf
Chief editor, Baen Books
I've never met Jim Baen, but I think rather highly of him, as he is a talented editor and very free and easy about the literature at Baen. One of the nicer things a publisher ever did was the
BAEN FREE LIBRARY ONLINE, a feat that hasn't been equalled by any other company I know of. Jim Baen demonstrates that it IS possible to be out to make a buck publishing and still retain your soul.
If you're a believer, say your prayers. If you're not, just think good thoughts. The world's a better place with Jim in it.
