A couple of gaming pubs arrived in the post tonight, both look promising.
1) SAX N' VIOLETS: The premiere issue of the Bulletin of the Society of the Daisy. The Daisy society, to which I have referred before in many places, is a society that is dedicated to bringing a sense of whimsy into miniature wargaming. The main focus of Daisy these days appears to be fictional world constructs (as in very in-depth discussions of made-up locations with obvious punning references in their names) and "peace games". The format is a one-sheet, 11 X 17, double sided. The first issue has an editorial, a general history of the made-up country of
Union Real de Scandalusia (something of an analog for Spain ("Andulasia", git it?). A Book Review, A little piece about using Corel Draw to enhance your hobbies, and notification of a PBeM game starting up. The magazine is a very promising (nay, charming) start in the right direction-- SAX N' VIOLETS is reminisicient of the great old focused amateur pubs done of the local xerox (borrowed from somebody's office after work, no doubt), although the pub standards of SAX N' VIOLETS is head and shoulders above that. SAX is the work of my good friend Otto Schmidt, the head of the Society (and frequent commentator on this blog). As a one-time winner of Daisy Award for
The Amish Rake Fight game I threw with Bob Giglio back in 2002, I might be a tad biased, but I still think it's a good read. Interested? Contact Otto at 1031 Stillwater Road, Newton, NJ 07860.
2)
PANZERSCHRECK 15 came in
FINALLY. This is the formerly digest sized amateur style wargaming magazine put out by Gary Graber of Minden Games. Issue Fourteen have brought the magazine from small concept, small press to semi-pro the current large-format magazine is slick looking, full color, and published to a very high standard. To its credit, the magazine isn't quite yet whoring for L2 Design group (the game company that prints the magazine) though there is is a large focus on L2's products. The current issue is loaded, I mean
LOADED! with little small concept games not unlike Micros. Unfortunately far fewer diecut counters are in this issue than were in number 14. Even with cut-yer-own counters and maps, Panzerschreck 15 is very much worth the money. The following games are featured in this issue:
MORTAIN 1944 is a two-player game simulating the (limited) German panzer offensive versus the Americans in France, August, 1944.
RAID ON SCHWEINFURT is a solitaire game depicting the USAAF raids in 1943 against the Schweinfurt ball-bearing factories in central Germany.
HIPPODROME is a multi-player (works best with 3 to 5 players) "Euro style" mini-sim card game of Roman chariot racing.
NORTH SEA CAMPAIGN is a strategic level World War I naval mini-sim for two players, where Britain's Grand Fleet squares off versus Germany's High Seas Fleet for control of the North Sea. Interested? Go to the
MINDEN GAMES PAGE (btw, the back issues are worth getting).
