Another Nut with a Gun

Fairfax County, where I live, is not Dodge City. We are one of the most affluent counties in the United States, and we have a very efficient, well-resourced and effective police force. Shootouts and other acts of violence are the exception, not the rule. So we were all astounded to hear about the death of a Fairfax County Police Detective in a shootout with a mentally deranged young man the other day. I know this blog is often a whimsical affair; I want to take today to express my prayers and condolences for the friends and family of Vicky Armel. I never met detective Armel, but I benefited from her service and all the little sacrifices she made to protect the public. Thank you, Officer Armel.

On a paranthetic note, I was sickened to see some of the postings from the perpetrator's MYSPACE account after the tragedy. Good taste prevents me from reposting most of them but let's just say that the overwhelming sentiment was that "we'll miss you, you did the right thing".... sigh. Freakin' people....
