The Missing Flarp: Good Friends being worried

Mister Nizz

, ,

If you know much about me, you know I value friendships. I also dig old exploitation and horror movies, so I am on several DVD and horror chat forums. Two of my favorites (which I will not name on grounds of violating a notion of privacy) recemtly had a flurry of worried posts from the members about two of our lost sheep living down near Hurricane Katrina. One, in particular, is a guy named "Flarp" on movie discussion boards. Flarp lives in New Orleans proper, working in a liquor store and living with his cate and GIGANTIC DVD collection. Now, Flarp and I aren't best buddies.. but we don't dislike each other either, and I think he can be terrificly funny, in an ascerbic fashion that most normal people don't get. I certainly would hope he could make it out of the devastation wrought by Katrina.

The following transcripts show (to me anyhow) how interconnected some communities can be. Especially geeks like us. Note the resolve of "eepie" living in Rhode Island, to DRIVE TO LOUISIANA TO GET FLARP, and Mr. Gorilla Man, who is taking time off from his shit job to accompany her.

I've edited out the political rants and the Bush attacks (hardly justified in my opinion) and the newsclip quotes and the people who just post smileys and the other crap. I've also not posted anyone's real name out of respect for their privacy. The postings come from TWO message boards (boards one and two-- two is actually more up to date than one and it is the first archive. The two are linked within the document). It's an interesting saga. I hope I'm the sort of man that would generate this kind of feeling in someone. Read on!

Flarp,

I don't know if you can hear this but you may want to start building that
ark out dvd boxes and empty cans. Make sure you stop by work before the
storm hits to stock up as I expect 40's of Steel Reserve and Phillies
Blunts will be the new currency of New Orleans.

Keep us posted.

I picture some kind of heartwarming scene where he takes in a poor black
child stranded out in the storm...or else some homies save his life, yo....like
an Afterschool Special or something.

weather it out by himself down there, but i know he'll be fine! he'll

damaged, not where he is.

i PROMISED him that everything would be fine! so it will be!

than anything, but his house should make it through okay. i'm *hoping*
that once it hits land it will slow down and change direction.

flarp keep us posted as to what's going on down there!

move things upstairs like you said, just in case, and sit tight! you'll
be fine, but i'd feel better about it if i was there too....

This is some wild stuff. I feel for those poor bastards stuck in The Superdome.
What a mess that's gonna be if they lose water because of flooding. All
those folks and not toilets that work.....no running drinking water possibly...

I'm sure Flarp will come through like a trooper. His job has hardened
his constitution and surival instinct!

God, I didn't think about all the DVD's and videos Flarp probably has....sheesh.

I'm watching all this on CNN and Fox New right now. They are doing everything
they can to try and one up the other on coverage. Fox had the guy reporting
earlier with big-ass goggles on his face to avoid debris.

Yeah, I saw Geraldo earlier, and then some bubblehead bleached blonde
a bit later on the Weather Channel, reporting out in that shit. I have
often envisioned in my mind a large piece of say, corrugated metal flying
out of nowhere one of these times, traveling at about 100 mph, and decapitating
on live TV whoever's the lunatic standing out in it. I've watched these
goofy bastards do this my entire life (for the Great God Ratings), and
,one day, mark my words, it will happen.

at this point he needs to get out of his house and into a shelter, but
i don't know where he's going to be. i can't go down there unless i know
where i am going

i was able to talk to him yesterday for a little bit, and i am hoping
that he can call me today. he promised to keep in touch, but it's a miracle
that i was even able to get through on the phone yesterday.

things are really bad down there....

Writer Poppy Z. Brite had to leave her most of her pets behind [though
that raises another discussion about whether it's responsible to have
so many animals that you're forced to leave them in case of an emergency,
but that's a topic for another time. I think she's running some kind of
quasi-animal sanctuary or something.]

flarp has a kitty.... he doesn't want to leave him behind, it would kill
him to do that... fuck, i couldn't do it either, my cats are my babies!

he's *got* to evacuate his house at this point. the water is just too
high - it's knee deep in his living room... even though it's dry upstairs,
he can't stay - that water is going to become contaminated and disease-laden
real quick. there's no electricity, no running water, no sanitation. he
can't stay there.

i have been trying to reach him all day... this is so awful...

And I just read on the net that now looters are starting to rear their
despicable heads, as well. They should put the word out that you'll be
shot on sight if you're seen doing this after a major disaster. Of course,
today the do it right in front of the cops, who are worthless, since in
today's climate, the looter's family would probably sue you & win...

Flarp said once that he collected paintings/art, but I honestly don't
know if he was just bullshitting or not. Does he? Man, if that's true,
he may have lost more than I originally thought. But hopefully, he was
able to get most stuff upstairs. Man-what a disaster for everyone down
there.

and thank you everyone else for your concern about flarp. i finally was
able to get through to him after work tonight - (that's a friggin miracle
right there, that the phone still works at all - i can't believe it, but
thank god it does!) - and he's doing okay for now. he's still camped out
in his house, he's got food and water and he's going to try to stick it
out as long as he thinks he can. tonight i am making phone calls trying
to find out if i can even get close to where he is - roads are blocked
and they're just not letting anyone in for any reason. but he's okay where
he is for tonight at least, i know that. i am going to see what i can
come up with for a plan to get down there and meet up with him somehow,
and i am going to be calling him back in the morning.

i will definitely keep you all updated.

i have not been able to reach flarp all day today.... i think the phone
lines are officially out now.

it's freaking me out that i can't get in touch with him, and i keep hitting
redial on my phone, just in case....

it's been about 24 hours since i spoke to him last. at that time, he
was still planning on sticking it out at his apartment until monday. but
conditions are deteriorating so badly down there now.... i have no idea
what is going to happen or what he is going to do.

i am so worried about him. especially now that i can't reach him at all.

my plan as of right now is this: i will be driving down south starting
sunday. i am picking up gorilla man in north carolina, and he will accompany
me the rest of the way. right now i am heading to mississipp for monday
- there is a good chance i may be able to meet up with flarp there. but
i know there's also a good chance that he may end up somewhere else too,
and i may end up having to drive to arkansas or even texas to find him
- but i am ready to do that.

i know this plan is VERY iffy, and there is a possibility that i might
not find him at all. a big part of this is me counting on him being able
to reach me somehow to let me know where he is.

but i have to take the chance, i have to do whatever i can to get him
out of there.

once we get down there, gorilla and i will be camping out in the car.
i seriously doubt we would find a place to stay, even if we could afford
it.

we're only going to be able to stay down there for a couple of days before
we head back. gorilla has to be home by wednesday night and i have to
be back in work on thursday.

i think my best chance of finding him would be if he does go to a shelter,
preferably a red cross one. i believe there are lists of names of people
in shelters, and i will have people researching that for me back home
while i am down there, to see if his name shows up. that way, even if
he can't reach me by phone, i can still find him.

i only pray that is what happens.

i thank you guys for all your support in this, it means so much to me
and to flarp too. he knows you are all asking for him and wanting to help
out.

regarding a flarp fund..... thank you so much for that offer, but right
now i don't know what to do about that. let me think about it a bit and
i will let you know, okay? thank you guys.

i will let you all know when i hear anything at all, especially if my
plan changes for any reason.

thanks again you guys.

me off the most, is that it's not bad enough down there, then you have
roaming thug gangs...it's not even the looters that are bad, they are
just doin' what comes with everything like this...most of them probably
need the shit they are taking, but these armed gangs...shooting at the
cops, at the rescuers and raping women...that is fucked...I think the
zero tolerance, shoot first ask questions later rule the law is using
is right in this situation...man I hope Flarp has a gun, or some kind
of defense...

remain calm. things are definately not as bad as major-media newscasts
are showing us. my cousin's daughter, samantha, was trapped in NO after
her plane was diverted there just before the storm. we worried like mad
of course, but everything turned out OK. she provided some brief phone
calls from her hotel once or twice during the storm and managed to befriend
a couple who had lost everything but their car during the storm. they
transported her to and fro as she was attempting to escape her predicament.
she was provided a plane ticket by her boss on the second day, but the
airport remained closed and she almost lost her hotel room in the process.
the hotel owner was going to evict the tenants to make room for the media,
but the people "convinced" him otherwise, thank goodness. her
friends eventually gave her a ride to baton rouge, where she caught a
plane back home (florida). our family all pitched in to give these people
$1000 for their efforts, although that may seem foolish as they've lost
everything. i'm sure it'll give them a breather from their struggle to
survive though.

it seems as though it's chaos and a hellish nightmare for the displaced
residents of NO right now, but i'm pretty sure everyone's helping one
another.

in a side note: fats domino's relatives have identified him in a press
photo being rescued from his home . . . he's still living. if fats can
make it, so can FLARP. i'd be more concerned about all of those zombies
right now. we'll hear from him as soon as the shit settles.

I hope you don't mind me posting a link to "the

MH, but I think it's the best way to keep
updated about Flarp's situation.

Last thing Eepie's heard is that he's doing ok. She's going over there
to get him...

Let's not forget that Dr. Kobb lives down that way too. Last I heard
from him was during the actual hurricane so I assume he's okay but we
never know. Hopefully all is well with all of them.

Kobb is fine...I have heard from him several times since the storm.

Flarp is still, missing...Eepie had contact with him, but now cannot
reach him at all...we are assuming that the lines are down, or maybe he
had a cell phone...and it's dead, and he couldn't charge it...don't know...I
don't think they have electricity down there yet...keep thinking about
him everyone...he'll be ok...

Motel Hell Posted: Sep 2 2005, 11:45 PM

I didn't know Dr. Kobb lived down that way. I only knew David Austin and
Flarp did. I hope Flarp and David are alright. And it's ok about posting
a link to the other board, Jerry. No prob Keep us updated on the situation.

What's this "other board" shit, anyway?

Here's the latest news, as of this afternon:

"Mission Aborted"

Evidently Scott & his mom are still within the disaster area, and
no one--even residents--will be allowed to go in there until Thursday.
Scott would be allowed to leave, but he has no way of getting to any place
where eep could pick him up.

Scott's roommate Susan will go in & bring him to her family's place
in Mississippi on Thursday, but there's no way for eep or MGM to be there
to get him without losing their jobs.

Eep was at MGM's place when she got this news, so she's spending the
night there, & heading back to Rhody tomorrow. There's just nothing
else to be done.

No word yet on what Scott plans to do beyond taking refuge in Mississippi.
He's probably too shellshocked to know which way is up, right now.
